New Orleans Center for Clinical Research (NOCCR) Knoxville is primarily a Phase I inpatient unit with access to up to 50 beds.  It is particularly well suited for conducting First-in-Human trials as it is fully equipped, including a state-of-the-art Mortara Surveyor System and is situated within the University of Tennessee Medical Center, located in close proximity to the hospital’s ER and ICU, providing added layers of safety with code team and 24-hour critical care coverage .  Our location provides access to specialists and special patient populations, on-site, same-day electronic transfer of clinical lab results, USP pharmacy capabilities, and on-site imaging services.  Additionally, we can directly access over 900 University physicians, which allows us to collaborate with specialists in all therapeutic areas.  This Unit is well known for its ability to conduct procedurally difficult trials and to recruit special populations, including volunteers with renal and hepatic insufficiency, elderly and postmenopausal volunteers, subjects with heart failure and hypertension as well as normal healthy volunteers.  While we have all of the benefits of being located on the campus of the medical center and within the hospital, we do not have any of the encumbrances as we do not fall under the hospital IRB and we execute contracts and budgets independent of the hospital.

William B. Smith, MD, President of VRG/NOCCR, is board certified in cardiology, nephrology, internal medicine and critical care and has been an industry leader in conducting clinical research for over thirty five years.  He has led in the development of adaptive study design and assisted directly with protocol development, including FIH, SAD-MAD with POC, renal PK and others.   He has been a key consultant to several large pharmaceutical companies and assisted many Biotech’s with their clinical programs.
