The Vernaza Luis Hospital is the largest medical center of Ecuador, and despite not being state-owned, its doors opens to all who need it.
The story of Luis Vernaza Hospital goes back to the colonial era. It was founded in 1564 and is recognized as one of the oldest in South America. It was built in its current location between 1922 and 1930, and named it in honor of Luis Vernaza who was Director of the Welfare Board from 1920 to 1940.

The diversity of our modern equipment for diagnosis and treatment of patients makes us unique in many aspects. The Hospital Luis Vernaza is an authentic teaching center, where doctors work and conduct scientific research. We have been recognized by the National Institution for Organ and Tissue Transplantation (ONTOT) as one of the best hospitals in Ecuador. We are equipped with all that is required to perform kidney transplants, and already we have successfully performed more than 135 kidney transplants in recent years. The first transplant was performed in June 1979, and the Unit for Organ and Tissue Transplantation was created in 2009.
